Distracted driving, road rage, driving on “autopilot” – these things have become all too common in our everyday lives. Solan McClean’s new book, Learning to Drive Into the Now: PRND, tackles these topics and teaches the reader to apply mindfulness principles to the act of driving.
Using our time in the car for dedicated practice of being purposeful and living in the moment is something that most of us probably never considered, but it makes perfect sense. Not only can this be an invaluable time to practice mindfulness meditation skills, but being present and fully invested in the act of driving can also serve to dramatically reduce accidents and driving errors that are due to being lost in thought or unaware of our surroundings.
McClean uses the letters PRND (which typically stand for Park, Neutral, Reverse, Drive) to remind readers to Practice, Relax, (be in the) Now, and Drive. He highlights a number of techniques that the reader can use to drive mindfully, offers a much-needed reminder about having compassion when you’re behind the wheel, and encourages the reader to carry this practice over into other aspects of life, with the goal of living as an aware being.
You’ve probably never realized that your driving time can be a gap in your experience of mindful living – but now that you know, this book will be a great addition to your practice.
